- WHAT'S NEW: VERSION 1.2
-
- COLOR PRINTER SUPPORT
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- Version 1.0 supported the HP Color DeskJet 500 series of printers
- as
- well as the most common black and white printers. With version 1.1
- we
- added the Cannon BubbleJet 600 C (BJC-600) printer and the Epson Styl
- us
- Color printer (widely advertized as being able to produce 760 DPI).
-
- If you do have a color printer but it is not an Epson, Hewlett Packar
- d,
- or BubbleJet, try the "Epson Color" selection on the printers men
- u.
- Most color printers are Epson compatible.
-
- SEPARATE MUSIC AND VOICE BUTTONS
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- Several users would like to turn the background music off, but like
- to
- hear the voice after pushing the buttons. The setup screen allows y
- ou
- to turn either or both of these options off.
-
- RESOLVING PROBLEMS
-
- "NOT ENOUGH FREE CONVENTIONAL MEMORY"
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- MS-DOS computers have several types of memory:
-
- - Conventional Memory, the first 640K
- - Upper Memory, the next 384K between 640K and 1 megabyte
- - Extended Memory (XMS), above 1 megabyte (defined using EMM386.EXE
- )
- - Expanded Memory (EMS), above 1 megabyte (defined using EMM386.EXE
- )
-
- Conventional Memory is the most precious -- without it, few progra
- ms
- can run -- even if you have eight megabytes of memory! To check h
- ow
- much memory your computer has left, enter the command MEM /C and lo
- ok
- for the column titled Conventional Memory. If it says you have le
- ss
- than 550K free, your computer probably is not be configured properly.
-
- DOS 6.0 and DOS 6.2 comes with a utility called MEMMAKER. Most peop
- le
- can cause the above problem to disappear, and increase their computer
- 's
- performance, simply by entering the command MEMMAKER from the D
- OS
- prompt.
-
- The primary reason DOS 5.0 (and now DOS 6.2) was so successful was th
- at
- it provided good memory management, using a utility called HIMEM.S
- YS
- for 286 and 386 computers. The primary purpose of HIMEM.SYS is
- to
- "Load High" into upper memory major portions of DOS, and other progra
- ms
- when you turn your computer on. MEMMAKER makes all these adjustmen
- ts
- for you.
-
- If you don't have MEMMAKER, or if you want to fine tune the way yo
- ur
- computer manages memory yourself, enter the command EDIT CONFIG.SYS
- at
- your DOS prompt. If you have a 386 class computer, your CONFIG.S
- YS
- file should look similar to the following:
- buffers=20 (number can vary)
- files=60 (number can vary)
- device=c:\dos\himem.sys (always include this line)
- device=c:\dos\emm386.exe noems (2 megs+ on 386 or 486 only)
- dos=high, umb (always include this line (no umb on 286
- ))
-
- All other resident .SYS, .EXE, and .COM programs in this file should
- be
- preceded by devicehigh = instead of just device =. For exampl
- e,
- replace DEVICE = MOUSE.SYS with DEVICEHIGH = MOUSE.SYS. In most case
- s,
- following these few steps will increase your memory dramatically
- by
- putting these programs in upper memory instead of conventional memory
- .
-
- After you are done editing CONFIG.SYS, EDIT AUTOEXEC.BAT. Yo
- ur
- AUTOEXEC.BAT file will usually have something similar to the followin
- g:
- verify on (optional)
- set home = c:\bingo (optional)
- prompt $p$g (could be different)
- path \dos;c:\util (probably much longer)
- loadhigh \dos\mouse.com (mouse driver)
-
- Use the loadhigh command on all resident .EXE and .COM progra
- ms
- in AUTOEXEC.BAT to put these programs into upper memory. For exa
- mple,
- instead of loading the mouse into conventional memory with the comma
- nd
- \DOS\MOUSE.COM, LOADHIGH \DOS\MOUSE.COM puts the mouse driver in upp
- er
- memory.
- When you are done making changes to CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT, rebo
- ot
- your computer. Enter the command MEM /C again, and you should see th
- at
- your computer has much more conventional memory available. If maki
- ng
- these changes don't help, get help from an expert.
-
-
- "VGA MONITOR REQUIRED"
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- Some super VGA and monocrome VGA cards are incompatible with o
- ur
- software. If you believe that your monitor supports standard VGA mod
- e,
- enter WIZARD /M from the DOS prompt. This command bypasses our vid
- eo
- card checking routine, so one of two things will happen: the progr
- am
- will work or the computer will freeze at a blank screen.
-
-
- "MOUSE REQUIRED"
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- THE COLOR WIZARD requires a mouse to run. We are often asked t
- he
- question, "My mouse works in Microsoft Windows. Why does THE COL
- OR
- WIZARD tell me that a mouse is required to run it?"
-
- Microsoft Windows has its own, built in mouse driver as part of t
- he
- program. THE COLOR WIZARD looks for a mouse driver which has be
- en
- loaded in AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS when you turn your computer o
- n.
- Look at the documentation which came with your mouse for details.
-
-
- SOUND CARD PROBLEMS
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- Most sound cards are Soundblaster compatible. If your sound card giv
- es
- you problems, enter this command from DOS: WIZARD /C. This will bypa
- ss
- the sound card initialization routine and turn off the sound.
-
-
- PRINTER PORTS
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- Over 9922642f our users have their printer attached to their fir
- st
- parallel port, which DOS refers to as the LPT1: device. If yo
- ur
- printer is attached to LPT1: - LPT3: then enter this command from DO
- S:
- WIZARD /1 for LPT1: (Default), WIZARD /2 for LPT2:, or WIZARD /3 f
- or
- LPT3:. If your printer is attached to COM1: or other serial devic
- e,
- redirect it to LPT1: using the MODE command from DOS. For details
- on
- how to do this see your DOS documentation.

- ===== Packing List =====================================
-
- As released by the author or publisher, this package contained the
- following files in addition to this VENDINFO.DIZ:
-
- Filename Size Date Time CRC32
- FILE_ID.DIZ 388 1-Apr-1995 12:12a 60D1B46C
-
-
- ===== Installation =====================================
-
- The installation procedure for The Color Wizard is easy. The package
- includes a program, "INSTALL.EXE", which automates the entire process.
- You will need about 2 megabytes of available disk space on the hard
- drive on which you plan to install The Color Wizard.
-
- The exact steps you need to take will depend on how you received
- The Color Wizard.
-
-
- INSTALLING FROM DISKETTES
-
- To install from diskette(s), you need to perform the following steps.
-
- o Place The Color Wizard distribution diskette "Disk 1" in the
- appropriate diskette drive.
-
- o Execute the "INSTALL.EXE" program on the distribution diskette.
- For example, if the distribution diskette is on drive A:, type
- the MS-DOS command, "a:install".
-
- o Follow the instructions presented by the installation program.
- You will have a chance to approve installation before any changes
- are actually made to the contents of your hard drive. The
- program will ask you for a destination directory, and will copy
- the files to that directory. If you received The Color Wizard
- on two diskettes, you will need to insert Disk 2 in the diskette
- drive when asked to do so. If you so direct it, the installation
- program will install executable programs and documentation in
- other directories of your choice. It will make no other changes;
- specifically, it will not modify your autoexec.bat or config.sys
- files.
-
-
- INSTALLING FROM A HARD DRIVE
-
- If you downloaded <product> from a BBS (or received it in the form of
- archive files from some other source), you will need to perform the
- following steps.
-
- o Extract the contents of the archive file(s) in a temporary
- directory on your hard drive. The procedure for doing this
- varies, depending on the form in which you received the package.
- In all likelihood, the fact that you are reading this text means
- that you already have the necessary tools and knowledge to
- perform this step. If not, you should be able to obtain
- directions for this from the same source from which you received
- the package.
-
- o Execute the "INSTALL.EXE" program which you have extracted. For
- example, if the temporary directory into which you have extracted
- the <product> package is C:\TEMPDIR, you would execute the MS-DOS
- command, "c:\tempdir\install".
-
- o Follow the instructions presented by the installation program.
- You will have a chance to approve installation before any changes
- are actually made to the contents of your hard drive. The
- program will ask you for a destination directory, and will copy
- the <product> files to that directory. If you so direct it, the
- installation program will install executable programs and
- documentation in other directories of your choice. It will make
- no other changes; specifically, it will not modify your
- autoexec.bat or config.sys files.
-
- When you're satisfied that the installation was successful, you should
- delete the temporary directory FROM which you installed The Color Wizard
- (C:\TEMPDIR, in the above discussion), including all its contents.
-
-
- YOU'RE READY TO GO
-
- Once The Color Wizard is installed, run WIZARD.EXE from the DOS prompt,
- or if you have installed it to Windows, click on the Color Wizard Icon.
- The Color Wizard progam will tell you everything you need to know to
- evaluate the program, and how to register. Enjoy!
